Many of us may hear the word Mindfulness and automatically think about meditation. I listened to a speaker, Dr. Ellen Langer, recently that framed this in a new way for me and I loved it so much, I wanted to share it with you.
Do you find yourself feeling distracted? Like ALL THE TIME
Have you ever noticed that when you think you already know something, you often stop really noticing it?
We move through familiar places, routines, and relationships believing we already know what’s there. And when our mind decides, “I know this,” it naturally stops paying attention. That’s when life can begin to feel repetitive, predictable, or even boring.
Mindfulness offers us another way to occupy the mind—one that can replace some of the needless thoughts that keep piling up.
Here’s a simple exercise: Notice three new things.
Anytime you go somewhere familiar, take a moment to look around and notice three things you’ve never noticed before. Maybe it’s a detail in a room, the way the light falls across a wall, a sound in the background, or something about the people around you.
Try it with someone you know well, too. Notice three things about them that you haven’t noticed before. A facial expression, the way they phrase something, a new interest, or simply something you’ve overlooked.
Do this every day.
Something interesting begins to happen. You realize there is always more to notice. You may find yourself thinking, Wow, I didn’t know this as well as I thought I did. And eventually, you may begin noticing new things without even trying.
Everything is always changing. People change. Places change. We change. And everything can look different depending on the perspective from which we experience it. Perhaps we don’t have to know everything after all. Perhaps there is freedom in simply being curious.
When we approach life as though there is always something new to discover, even familiar experiences can become fresh again.
This is one of the gifts of mindfulness. It brings us back into the present moment. It engages the brain in a new way and introduces more curiosity, variety, interest, and even fun into everyday life. So today, wherever you are, ask yourself:
What are three things I can notice that I’ve never noticed before?
You may be surprised by how much of your familiar world is still waiting to be discovered.
Wishing you joy and happiness, Kathy
